I'm an art director, so my life consists of making decks. Some turn out nice, others not so much. I never formally trained in graphic design (more of a conceptual creative who has been picking up skills along the way). Are there any great teaching resources or even templates out there for building banging client decks? Every time i need to make another one I just feel so exhausted by the idea of it.

A trick that serves me well is going one level abstracted when looking for references. Of course you want to make a good looking deck, but if the first layer of approval is yourself.

So I look for broad references of communication design. Any sort of “editorial design” searches will serve you well. Go to Pinterest, Designspiration, Dribbble, Are.na, Cosmos etc.

Most of the time you are searching for a system. Finding one visual mechanic that works and can be pulled into the deck works for me

It's awesome that you want to get better at building decks. Most people don't realize the difference it can make when selling in an idea, so kudos to you.

One hack that i've used over the years is to reference myself. What I mean by that is i'll take a deck I built for another client (one that I like the look of) and switch it up a little bit. I'll change the colors, flip out a typeface, and switch the photography until it feels like a whole new deck. This is a good way to get started, and helps you overcome the mental block of building something from scratch.

Another tip is to focus on quality images. Picking good photography / swipe is one of the most important aspects of building a good deck. It doesn't really matter what your layout is if your images are ass. It's a skill you'll develop over time, but sites like shotdeck and eyecandy make it easy to get started.

Finally, someone else in this thread mentioned Swiss design. Having a working knowledge of grids and the relationship between elements in a layout is HUGE when it comes to building a good deck. It's not the sexiest stuff, but check out Grid Systems by Josef Muller-Brockmann. This book was like the bible when I was in art school.

Each agency have their own template for deck and presentation and you should make a template for a place you work at once and fill it with concepts every time. I think the ideas inside the presentation should be more important than the template. Why are you designing different templates/ presentation for each assignment? It doesn’t make sense to me!

How much of a pay cut are you willing to take to (hopefully) re-find purpose in your job?

My Context: work in tech, company has HQ in the Bay but I live in Canada. Single, no kids, 1 mortgage, no debts.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Hello all, need some advice. Am currently working for a government consulting agency, but wishing to leave due to the way the project is being managed...I am in at least 4-5 hours of meetings a day, so barely have time to prepare for demos, preparation of slides for the client, nevermind being able to write decent stories(tickets)... Usually have to rush writing requirements, steps, etc, ...
So I have been looking around.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Adding this because I find this type of information helpful. Went through the interview process with Meta. They moved quick. Recruiter, hiring manager, and full loop all in a two week period. (I know this was fast because I’ve interviewed with Meta before and it was more like a month between hiring manager and full loop). I was told I would hear in 2 weeks or so on a decision. During this time I got another offer. I let meta know the update. Was told I was top pick but had to wait for…

Any in-house antitrust counsel willing to offer up some advice? I just started in a firm's well-regarded antitrust group. What do I do over the next few years to make myself most marketable to move in-house? And when is that move actually feasible/ideal for antitrust specialists?

Seems like I can pull work from the whole discipline (merger clearance, civil lit, criminal) — should I spread myself across all of it to maximize my skillset/marketability?

All thoughts and advice welcome. TYSM :)
