I’m applying to transfer my UBE score to Illinois. I need to submit three attorneys as professional references for each jurisdiction I’m admitted in. The instructions say that they need to be people other than the “employers, former employers, and character references listed elsewhere in your application for admission.” Does anyone know if I’m allowed to list attorneys from my former firm who I worked with here? I wasn’t sure if that’s what “former employers” means in this context.

I’m a junior in big law and in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that counsels produce perfect drafts and yet aren’t partners but partners can’t write two sentences without numerous typos. Shouldn’t counsels be partners and partners counsels instead?

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

How many of you biglaw associates are on your grind trying to recruit people to earn a big referral bonus? I’m treating it like a side gig. Ironic that my firm does not give associates any kind of origination credit. If they took the same philosophy with business development, I would direct my efforts there too.!

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?
