Personally, I received little to no real accommodations or “help” after self identifying with my previous job
I considered doing the same when I was pregnant and not able to take medication but decided against it. I’m happy with my decision. I took a big picture view of what ‘Accommodations’ like flexible deadlines, clear expectations instruction on assignments (vs. the reality of ‘just figure it out’) would mean for me as a manager - more burden on already busy teammates and senior managers and explaining to clients why we couldn’t meeting their timeline or bringing another manager in to help complete my work on time… all of those things would create resentment and reflect poorly.
I ended up just figuring it out and getting a lot more organized and developing better communication to get better instructions and expectations from clients and senior leadership. It honestly helped me grow as a professional to take a different view of understanding my job expectations are and how I could achieve them when I wasn’t 100% vs asking for accommodations.
I personally would never disclose and never take disability unless there was no way around it. I would request the quieter workspace on the grounds of productivity not adhd.
I say never, but I should say if the US starts acting like a humane country with workers’ rights maybe I would disclose, but that is very far from the current atmosphere.
My first company forced me to disclose my medical condition against my own will. The whole experience was humiliating and gave me panic attacks for a week. Ever since disclosing it, my then-boss became more manipulative and used my vulnerabilities against me. Despite what they claimed, people are not gonna be more accommodating but treat you worse. My previous industry (social services) is highly exploitative which explains why. Even after I got out of that sector I still don’t declare my condition just to protect myself. After being lied to by helping professionals countless times I don’t trust the social service sector anymore.
Thanks for the kind words. It wasn’t just that specific company but the company I interned at before joining my first company also disclosed my medical condition without my knowledge. The supervisor at my internship site told me not to be ashamed of my medical condition and that it will benefit me, only to criticise me while I was not around and even disclosed my medical condition to companies that did a reference check on me which cost me so many job offers. It also became the reason for my first employer mistreating me. If only my parents did not disclose my medical condition to the school, the school would not have disclosed it to my internship site who would then disclose it to my prospective employers. That’s why if I have kids next time, I will never disclose their medical condition to MOE (my country’s education ministry), apart from allergies or asthma
I had mentioned it to my boss briefly in passing because my office was next to a gathering area and it sounded like a hen party all day, every day. She actually set up office next to me for about a week and then agreed wholeheartedly that it must be very difficult for me to get any work done because she hadnt been able to concentrate either. She then moved me over to our corporate HQ across the street. It is sooooo much less noisy here! However, my company is all about culture and doing the right thing. If I had mentioned it at my prior place of employment I have the feeling that the owner (my boss) would have found a way to illegally shove me slowly, albeit painfully out the door. Just because something is illegal doesn't mean they won't find a way to work around it if they really want to. Sad that something like this could still be seen as an issue in some places in this day and age.
Good luck with whatever you choose. You got this!
I forgot to add that I was in no way treated any differently one way or the other after disclosure.
I would disclose it. If you’re punished in any way, or not granted accommodation, you can sue. I’m suing my former employer but their actions were egregious
It depends on your boss. Is your boss already supportive in your training, job development, success, and similar or are they blaming everything on you despite their part in a project delay, not training you, not looking out for your success, shaming you over age, size, gender, condition (pregnancy or disability), lying on progress reports, being hostile to you and not letting your colleagues help you? Back before I was in this profession I had the latter type of boss and I sought reasonable accomodations (RA) for ADHD. My boss perceived my RA as a burden. It added to the negative mindset my boss already had towards me. The job did not end well.
