I’m consider a job offer. The salary is good, but it’s a smaller/newer/startup company currently with about 35 employees. They don’t offer an employer health insurance plan - instead I can pick my own private plan and they will pay for it. I’ve looked at the Marketplace plans in Illinois (where I live) and they all seem like crap compared to the plans I’m used to. For example, none of them are even HSA eligible. Which would be important to me for savings, because the other main issue (cont.)

If they are paying for it you probably don't want the cheaper HDHP that would allow for HSA.

Half the benefit of the HDHP is the premium savings vs a more expensive plan allow you to mostly fund HSA. If you have an existing HSA you can leave it unused and invested for the tax free growth.

For me the benefit is being able to contribute $4300 (or whatever the max is) to a triple tax advantage account. The tax savings alone on the contribution usually outweigh my out-of-pocket costs towards the deductible. Plus the money grows tax free once invested and I’ll never be taxed when I withdraw.

(Cont) other main issue is they don’t offer a 401k. Not just that there’s no match - there’s no 401k for me to put money into at all. I’ve estimated that it would take about an extra $10k in salary per year to make up not having a 401k. I’ve already pushed my salary request to the top of their range - any tips for negotiating more based on lack of these two rather important benefits? Would not having these make you rethink the offer altogether? For what it is worth I am excited about the role, the company, and the future potential.

I've done so well in this new role within the company that they are hiring another person to assist with what I do. I've voiced to my boss that I'd like to manage this department and they indicated that this is the thought for the future. Now they are asking me to train this person while I have my plate full. Is it wrong for me to expect either a promotion or to be paid to train this person?

Have an acquaintance who is a single mom; she purchased a used car 3 mos ago. Six wks later her 17yo wrecked it, air bags deployed, and estimates have ranged between $10-$18k in needed repairs while $21k is still owed. Acquaintance was switching insurance policies and flubbed the coverage dates and there were a few days where the vehicle was uninsured. No GAP insurance. I'm not seeing many options for her besides to continue pmts, fixing just enough to drive or voluntary repo. Thoughts?

We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

I have a LOT of credit card debt. It has just grown over time and I can’t find my way out. I’m considering debt consolidation, specifically a company called National Debt Relief which seems legit but I’m just so hesitant because I’m scared to make my situation worse. Or a personal loan to pay off all the CC debt and then have a smaller all in one payment. I’m intelligent and I work in finance, it’s so embarrassing. HELP.

Seeking feedback on GAP insurance. I had a family member who purchased a car in June or July. They were in an accident last week and it sounds like the car will be declared a total loss. Never dealt with this before, so wanted to ask if anyone has ever had an instance where the insurance didn't cover the outstanding balance of the loan and the insured then owed money? Car was $35k, $7k down, finance $28k. Gap insurance is through lender, not auto insurer.
