I’m considering a partner role at Greenberg and Traurig in the NY office. Would appreciate any tips or comments on the firm, especially from those with experience there. Thanks.

To which firm exactly?

Black box comp

likehelpful

Of the firms of which I have knowledge, I’d guess 60-70% are open book

1. I wouldn't put on a public forum that you might jump ship immediately, especially when it's probably relatively easy to figure out who you are.

There’s nothing negative in my post. Just trying to get some feedback on the firm. They seem like a good place to transfer my business to.

like

What group? Are you getting a guarantee?

Shareholder comp is a formula based on origination + collections (usually on a 3 year average). Therefore comp as between shareholders can vary widely.

I interviewed with a person from the NYC office but would have been based out of DC. Honestly, in love the people at GT all around. Their culture seems to be firm wide but I think the practice group still might have a large impact on how you might function. I decided not to go to GT due to black box compensation. However, if I knew what the comp would have been in the future I totally would have went to GT. People say run and that they are cheap, but from a business perspective I understand GT and they are no different then some of the rest of these firms. I ended up going to a slightly better ranked firm with a larger practice group, but I am dying to find a way to connect with the people at GT in the future! I would love to go there to be a partner.

My understanding is that each managing partner acts as “god” and makes sole decisions on comp etc. also, my understanding is that there isn’t any true equity unless you are in the select few

likehelpful

That might be true for associates (with input from practice group) but national controls comp for shareholders and of counsel.

Hi! I’m also considering partner role at GT. DM me if you’d like to chat. Cheers and best of luck!
