The truth is, what they are usually looking for are reps who already act like informal leaders. They share what works, help onboard new reps, run parts of team meetings, and care about team number, process, and coaching. Not only their own commission check. If all the energy is “I hate quota; I want out,” that reads as burnt‑out IC, not future manager; if you’re proactively improving process, asking for feedback, and genuinely enjoy helping other reps win, you’re starting to look like someone who’s ready for a first-line leadership track.
I like to ask them why they are pursuing a career in management. Usually, that will give a pretty honest and solid indication of whether they are just going through the motions or actually have a passion for leading others. Usually, the ones that want power and authority are the ones I'm least likely to push forward in the process.
