I graduated in 2009 and this is a harder market than it was back then. I had to take a non-design job for a year or two until I found something full time.
No shame in just getting paid.
I am thinking about going down that route, since this is a hard market. Thank you for the perspective, I really appreciate it.
My first 2 years after graduation I was working non-design jobs while taking on design volunteer, freelance, and gig work. Boost your resume with it and keep putting yourself out there! I’ve also made design work inspired by the subject matter of my non design gigs and it caught the eye of a future employer that handled creative needs in a similar industry.
I recently did sign up to do some volunteer work for a foundation, that also includes training in Canva. I do appreciate the feedback!
I have a master's degree, have worked with many of the top brands. Now I am doing construction for $25 an hour. I was getting $95 at a bank. Until they inexplicably stopped giving me work. Others who were there tell me it's a toxic culture. I know even the best firms are struggling.
Don't you have a full-time job? Otherwise, working only once every two weeks wouldn't be enough to support yourself.
I do not, which is why I've been desperately searching for one. I've done over 150 applications and they haven't gone anywhere. Only a select few led me to interviews, but no offer. I know thay portion of the application is more on myself for not standing out compared to other applicants.
Currently working it he field as in-house art person but company is looking to push work outsourced to India. So I’m looking for a new job as well.
I had this happen when I was an Art Director at a catalog company. The boss had me send some pages of my layouts to a company there. When they came back, they looked sloppy and didn't follow the hierarchy/formula for displaying product, callout for cross-selling, etc. I explained all this to him and walked him through where the problems were going to be. Once he understood, it never came up again. Can your team make a similar case to your leadership?
Unfortunately, I also had a client who stopped having my team create broadcast video spots in favour of a company that made generic video templates and just swapped brand colors, logos, used stock photos, and a mundane voiceover. This was a national brand. They wanted to cut costs, and this was one of the new CEO's ideas.
Either way, good luck to you, and yeah, keep an eye on the job market. It's tough out here.
Where are you located?
I'm in Pennsylvania, between Allentown and Philadelphia. Most of my searches lead me an hour out from where I live, but driving doesn't bother me!
