I split bills with my partner of 10 years 🤷🏻♂️. We own a house together and each pay half of the mortgage etc. We are both software engineers, however, with similar income potential.
Only thing I'd bear in mind is that grad students make essentially minimum wage. If you're a highly paid professional and eating like it, it might make sense to pick up the tab at least some of the time.
Haha it’s usually a red flag 🚩 that the guy doesn’t offer to pay on the first couple of dates in straight dating. I’d definitely split if the other person is making decent money. And I wouldn’t expect the other guy to pay if he makes significantly more. But I was a bit confused about the norm after some Reddit research 😂

Pick up the bill if you feel like treating but continuing to split is fine!

Don't worry about doing research in an attempt to conform to norms. Do what works well for you and your date.
Practically speaking, you would be able to go out more and/or do nicer things if you paid more, so I'd lean towards paying more. This doesn't mean you pick up everything all the time, but maybe you pick up dinner and he picks up the movie tickets or other arrangements.
My husband and I started dating when we were both in grad school and didn't have a lot of money, which constrained our activities, so a high earning bf would have been nice and convenient.
Thanks! So happy for you guys. Haha hopefully I get to become the high earning bf!
In my world, early on it is the person that asked the other person. As the relationsip progresses then we started randomly picking up the check. Because I make much more than he does, I would normally pay for the higher costing dinners and he would pickup the lower costing dinners. Always nice to take your partner out for dinner and pickup the check, just make sure both sides are good with whatever is decided.
Split the bill unless you feel like paying for both, but it might make it awkward when you don’t pay for meals beyond that. Maybe pay for his birthday or a special occasion but I’d go Dutch treat otherwise.
