I’m doing 5 days in Seattle and 5 in Portland OR in August, and taking Amtrak between. Suggestions appreciated! I like culture, architecture, outdoors activities, good food. More daytime than nightlife guy, 50s, gay male. Cheers!

In Seattle, the Chihuly exhibit is very cool, and on a nice day, the view from the space needle is fantastic. The islands around Seattle are so beautiful and worth ferrying to, or renting a boat on Lake Washington is fun and checking out all the uber mansions. Thr arboretum is also great, and there are obviously a lot of sports teams and live music opportunities there if either appeals. I also like their art museum because it’s a real mix of periods and styles. We had two very good meals that I wrote down at Wild Ginger and The Walrus & the Carpenter.

For Portland, both the Japanese Garden and Rose Test Garden are beautiful and peaceful. An amazing hike within the city is going either direction between the Pittock Mansion and the bottom entrance to Forest Park. It’s pretty steep, so starting at the Mansion is the easier direction. Hopefully you’ll have a car because then you could take a drive out to Hood River to windsurf or watch the windsurfers and to see Multnomah Falls. Or the beach is a two hour drive and well worth a day trip - Oregon beaches are something really special. So beautiful. There are LOTS of breweries and spirit distillers in Portland so that’s a great option if you enjoy that type of thing, and the food scene is amazing. You also MUST go to Powell’s Book Store. There is nowhere else like it. I could be there for a full day. And just walking along the river front (the Willamette, which is pronounced will-AM-it, btw) or renting bikes to cover a few miles and cross the bridges is fun. Also check to see if the symphony is playing or if a good concert is happening because Portland is very into the arts.

Have a great trip!

The golden rule is a good one to follow.

Seattle: I like to walk around the Olympic Sculpture Park, and always recommend a whale watching day trip, if your budget allows it.

Not gay but accidentally walked into a gay bar in Seattle somewhere in 2006 with my buddy. Nicest people in the world.

Portland is probably super gay friendly too. Have fun!

I live in PDX. Before I provide any suggestions, I have two questions: do you have access to a car (the driving suggestions here are good, but they also involve a lot of driving)? And you say more daytime than nightlife, I'm assuming you're looking to eat your way through town? So restaurants and stuff to do in town during the day?

Food tips for Portland: go to Kachka (and opt for the full experience), Kann and Hat Yai. Chefs kiss 😘

I second wild ginger for Seattle.

I second the Japanese garden. Make a reservation at the tea house. I can’t remember if you need a reservation for the garden but check that.

Farmhouse Kitchen Thai in Portland was so good!!

Agree!

Mothers is great for brunch and near the riverfront so can be a good combo of food / activity.

Other good restaurants are Southpark Seafood, Kachka (Portland has a large Russian population), Butterfly Belly Vietnamese, and Stickers Asian (which is on the East side of Portland). Generally, there is really good Asian food in Portland - hard to go wrong.

Seattle is a great city to visit I would stay downtown and you can get around walking, Ubers, or the monorail for most places. I think the Ballard Locks and Fish Ladder is supper cool and the botanical garden on the north side is nice. Just east of there on Ballard Ave (north side of the bay) there are a bunch of restaurants and a nice walkable area (we moved our car from the Locks to lunch on Ballard Ave). Also take a ferry somewhere. Bainbridge is easy and you can walk around the town and then ferry back. I had the best ice-cream of my life there. The Seattle art museum is worth walking through as well.

Lots of great suggestions, thanks all!
