what we know as "normal" is going to change moving forward. Same thing that happened with 9/11. The country changed. And I want you to know that it's okay to grieve that. It's okay to grieve your old life. It will take weeks most likely to get to a point where we can go out and relive our lives so personally, I would revamp the book, Learn a couple new platforms or skills, apply for unemployment, try to get a job working part time to get work in the mean time.
This will pass but please have hope that you will get another job later. No one will hold this against you.
You’re amazing, AD3. Have a great day. 🙏🏼
I’ve heard that isn’t not really comparable to anything else we have experienced and my advice to you would be to work on your book and start looking for freelance
There is no normal. This is life now.
I am so sorry to hear that. I am young, but I haven’t had my first job. I was in the process of a job search while this was happening. I think a few places are offering resources for younger creatives ... one being We Are Next . I will say this... because you actually have experience in an agency... you’ll be more competitive than most of us. Good Luck
I graduated in May of 2002. It was rough for a year but I eventually got a job. Don’t lose heart.
I’m so sorry for what you are going through. But like what others said, apply for the unemployment fund, build your book and learn a few new skills, find small freelance gigs, market yourself as someone who can fill in the need (including design/editing). I don’t really agree this is our new normal now, but I do think it will take to at least end of MAY to go back.
May is pretty optimistic.
Better aim a better situation around september or something. Hope things will get better anywayw
I was around in the late 1990s, pre-dotcom bust. The bust happened around 2000, then 9/11 happened. Things didn’t stabilize until around late 2002/early 2003. The Great Recession killed 2008 and 2009, things started recovering around late 2009/early 2010. I was in NY for all of this, and freelance during each big downturn.
Based on what I’ve experienced, I think this downturn will last about 18 months to 2 years.
To survive, I slashed my rates and took any freelance job I could find, and collected UI benefits between freelance assignments.
It’s not comparable. NYC was only shut down for 5 days. It affected the markets some, but everyone was still going to work after. This is much different. Sorry to hear, OP. What’s good though is I assume you don’t have kids or major family responsibilities so work on your book and try to freelance in the interim.
Some clients will rise, and other opportunities will appears. Probably not the one that would be obvious 3 months ago, but you find new stuff anyway.
I started in 2008, it’s been hard but made it in the end anyway, even if I’m still strugglin to go where i wanted to..
Good luck.
I graduated in 2009. There were no jobs. Signed up at every temp agency and ended up getting an admin job at a hospital. It paid the bills, it had benefits, it's just what you had to do at that time.
