The best advice is to go in willing to learn. Be like a sponge and learn about the nature of the business and what it takes to be successful. Most of the law you’ll re-learn because you’ll have to research and learn the nuances every time it comes up. Tax law is ever changing, so there’s always going to be new guidance or case law coming out.
As two additional asides 1) learn to write well and distill the law to its basic component parts. Clients and those you report to are busy and will appreciate you speaking “non-tax”, and 2) get comfortable with excel.
It’s okay to feel like you don’t know anything, we’ve all been there after the LLM. Just always go the extra mile when it comes to tax research, it’s so vast. Overtime everything makes more sense and you will realize that you’ve learnt a lot of concepts in school and know more than you think.
Thank you
Spend as much time as you need learning a new concept. It is expected that you will need more time than someone with more experience and the bills that go to the client are not your responsibility, if some of your time needs to be written off so be it. The investment and knowledge you gain will pay dividends to both you and your firm in the long run.
