Consider...my kid hates learning new songs on the violin. She loves the violin, hates new songs. What she loves is the fluidness of play of what she knows, and what she hates is the jarring, slow jerk and assumption of judgement as she slowly pushes through something new. It doesn’t take too long, though, before the new thing is fluid and she’s happy again. When she’s in New Mode, I tell her to DO, DON’T THINK, and to remember she knows what the others side of it feels like. Maybe you’re in New Mode (usually a scary thing) and just have to detach enough (don’t think so hard) to do the things until they’re second nature. Then again, maybe the next set of tasks is taking you away from your craft, which is all you want to do and want to continue to evolve. If you’re happy with the pay range - then refuse the promotion or leave. The reality is the higher up you go, the more you have to manage relationships than exercise your craft.

So, a month ago I was offered a data engineer position at a fintech firm. I was going to accept it. The interview process had taken over a month. Then, at the last minute, an old coworker/friend - who is a manager at FAANG now - randomly offered me a data engineer __contractor__ position at a FAANG. The rate was really good - more than the fintech company was offering as annual salary. Rate was 160/HR and fintech was 275K TC. The benefits are ok - it’s a W2 contractor. But I’m thinking of...

I'm in an interesting position. I got an offer for an Associate manger (level 8) role at a tier 2 firm. I asked if bumping it up to level 7 (Manager) role is an option, and was basically told that it is if I really want to, but I should be careful what I wish for. SM basically told me that he thinks I will be a lot better set up for success in the long run if I were to start at level 8. What are your thoughts? I would be coming from a large ad agency where I'm an Account Director.

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement. They paid for my travel to their headquarters for in-person training. After interacting with my manager and some of the attorneys, I feel like I made a mistake. Manager is demeaning and rude. A bunch of the attorneys dropped not so subtle hints that people who work from home are causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know what to do.
