I find it interesting how focused 72 is on improving many of the other faults of the industry (diversity, maternal/paternal leave, etc) but how indifferent leadership is to overwork.
In my early 30s and over it. Left adv last week. Fingers crossed it gets better.
I'm 40, my last day is in less than 2 weeks. Leaving advertising and (fingers crossed) never looking back. Don't know what I'm doing next for work but I do know that advertising and all these agencies are not worth what we all put into them.
It's everywhere! Same boat tho. I'm tired of working every weekend and 70+ hours a week. I'm tired of missing dinner with my friends and family. Im tired of having to cancel vacations so I can put in another 20 hours of work. Etc etc etc. and the more I read on here the more I realize that it's not just the agency I'm at but the entire industry. If you can get out to something that can deliver a great work life balance and great salary then do it.
Client side. I want a 9-5/10-6 sort of schedule. And no weekends.
So close to leaving. Totally over it.
Me too ^ it's never brought up....
What else would you do? Feeling the same way but also feeling trapped in this industry.
7+ but I don't think it matters. Just go for it if you want a change. Try it out.
72 is famously rough in this sense (hence most of their creative teams being hella young). Don't worry OP, you have options my friend, without even leaving NY
Get on the right account. Pharma accounts work great hours
Yuuuup. Job hunting right now with the goal of going client side (at least until I figure out what I'd rather be doing outside of advertising altogether). Mainly trying to leave agency side due to the hours.
I'm out in 5 weeks. Becoming a web developer. By forever ad life 👋👋
Some teams are there 80 hours a week. Some 50. Depends entirely on role and account. But no one is there for 40.
Great question.
Long hours are not a turn off if you're having fun. If you're wondering, it probably means you're not finding purpose in the work. Two ways: 1. stay in advertising to build grit, crazy work ethic, make connections that will serve you later. 2. Leave to find a job you love so much that you don't mind putting the hours, or a job that gives you balance. Advertising is unforgiving with those who don't put in the hours. People end up being frustrated for being perceived as B Players when they don't want to sacrifice their lives for advertising. You need to be ok with that. Or leave. Or put in the hours. There's a reason advertisers earn so much: it's a draining job.
How many hours would you like to work each week?
Is 72 work/life balance worse than other shops you've been at? How many hours we talking.
That's gross and pointless. What a waste of life.
ask anyone who's ever freelanced at 72 what they think. Let's just say there's a reason they never do hourly. The place would tip over in a month haha
I freelanced at 72's LA office and was doing 12-15 hour days pretty much every day. Not to mention weekly travel to the clients once a week. The people are really awesome there though. Got my hands on some fun work they were doing. And got to experience 72 Day- which is hands down the best agency party/event I've ever been to. 👍🏻
