I’m interviewing for a cost accountant role at a massive aerospace firm, and the job description sounds like a different language to me. I’ve only ever done audit and tax, so the idea of standard costing and variance analysis is intimidating. The pay is amazing, but I’m terrified I’ll get there on day 1 and realize I have no idea how a factory actually works. Is cost accounting something a regular CPA can pick up on the fly, or is it a specialized skill set you need years of training for?

You’ll get used to it. Every new job has a learning curve. Believe in yourself and you will do at your job.

If you can handle the complexity of a Big 4 audit, you can definitely learn standard costing. You’ll be fine on the math especially once you understand why a machine being down for four hours cost the company $50k.
