Oh sorry, accidentally removed my message when trying to edit. Get research experience and take math classes. A very common feeder is working at the Federal Reserve, if you can get in. Your Deloitte experience is of extremely limited value, if any. I think a Master’s is of limited, to almost no, value unless it’s in math, statistics, etc. but even then, not worth the cost IMO. Take the GRE and get > 90% on everything (> 95% if you’re applying to top schools). It’s not easy to get in. I’m a PhD in Econ at an M7, FWIW.
What do you want to do afterwards? Depending on the field of Econ you want to pursue, a business school PhD might be another good option. Very difficult admission as well, and much smaller cohorts, but the supply and demand of academic market might be better. Business admits 2-3 per discipline but most departments hire 1-2 new assistant professors each year; so the labor market is better.
The advice from EY is sound - more math the better. Not just for admission but to survive the programs as well.
