Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

Former federal law clerk here, and I agree! Deff be yourself because chambers tend to be small and close knit so they will deff being using the interview to make sure you are a good fit. Of course, highlight research and writing experiences and how much you enjoy doing it. Also, I think it is good to highlight that you are an independent thinker and can figure things out...but can still collaborate with others. And, highlight that you are not afraid to speak up if you don’t agree or have a different point of view on something...but still understand that the judge makes the last call.
Thank you! I’m so excited and really want to do well in the interview. Your response is so helpful!
Usually judges want to make sure you are a good fit for chambers. Be yourself! Definitely a good idea to stress how much you love writing and research, and how you are looking for a position that allows you to do that. Sometimes you might work alone or work as a team, depending on chambers, so it’s a good idea to talk about being able to work with others, too. Maybe you could think of a time you had to go down a rabbit hole on westlaw to figure out an issue and talk about that?
Thank you so much!!
I echo the advice about being yourself. If you’ve gotten the interview, that means you’ve got the credentials to do the job so it’s your fit in chambers that will distinguish you. I clerked for two different judges and each chambers is unique. Use your opportunity to learn more about what chambers would be like and whether it would be a good fit for you. I always tried to be prepared and to have read a few recent opinions authored by the judge, which helps you get to know them and their writing style better. Also, be kind to and get to know the judicial assistant (and any other court staff). The JA has likely been with the judge longer than most of his clerks and judges value their opinion as to clerks tremendously (one of my JAs did the first round of reviewing applications for the position). Good luck!
Thank you so much, this is really helpful! I’m hoping chambers will be a good fit for me. I’ll definitely read some recent opinions, that is great advice. Thanks again!
