Most places I've been are prioritizing growth from within over external candidates. Not only do they know what they are getting, it's usually cheaper than someone new. If your company isn't doing that for you, time to move somewhere that will.
Sometimes it's difficult to move up in an organization because you can become pigeonholed. People will tend to see you as doing what you are currently doing and nothing more. And a new hire, in a strange way, has an advantage as their newness frees them from that stereotyping. Still, internal promotions are often the backbone of a company's strategy, so you shouldn't be discouraged from trying to advance. Just do a good job, and be the kind of worker who makes other people's work easier. That will help you stand out.
I think the most important thing (and it's cliche but it's true) is to be yourself, but like an even more confident version of yourself. You have the upper hand because you already work for the company so use your expertise to your knowledge!!
