As a manager, I usually log on at 8:30am and log off by 6pm. I sometimes have a chance to have a good 30 min lunch. Additionally, I find myself logging in for about an hour at night to wrap things up. I feel like this is the bare minimum that is expected so I’m struggling and thinking of an exit soon due to not finding enough time to spend with kids or time to myself. Just thinking out loud since I’m on a similar boat.
I think putting your foot down is a good thing. If you start to say yes every time they ask, you're going to end up pretty unhappy in the long-run.
I’m sure there’s more to this like management style and team size and work dynamics, but overall you’re allowed to have boundaries. You just have to be prepared for how they can be perceived and/or how they will hinder performance/promotion. It’s not a perfect system, but you get to decide your priorities. Maybe start by having a candid 1x1 with that Manager about the workload and assisting with team distribution of that work. This way you show you care while also looking to ease the stress.
Really need more info to give decent advice on this.
Yeah same. It’s not terrible. Mostly i do 7-9 emails and maybe some easy calls then i take my daughter to pre school get a coffee. Back on line by 9:30 work through to noon. Go work out, lunch, back online by 1:30 work through to 6 or so. Dinner, kids, then back online by 9 for an hour or two then sleep. Seems like a lot but it works with my schedule a lot better than a job where I had to be somewhere from 9-5
What are we talking? It is project dependent but working late fairly often is pretty standard. Clocking off between 5-8pm can work so you can put the kids to bed and then resume slide formatting.
Likely need to work at least 9-10 hours a day Monday - Thursday to keep things going
Plus of consulting is you have flexibility on when you work them
See if you can redirect the mindless focus on presenteeism to a focus on clear outcomes, quality and prioritisation. Then you will know what to do and knock it out of the park by 4:59pm. Just enough time to check for software updates before logging off for the day.

Answer is that it depends. The work still has to get done, but you certainly can and should carve out time for your family. I had a 7 month in tow when I started. I made it a priority that I would do dinner and bedtime with the family and communicated that at the start of every project. Did it make for a few later nights? Yeah, probably, but that’s the sacrifice you need to make for the compensation we get. That said, I think I’ve found the right balance and I hope to be here for a while
