In the same boat, now imagine being from IBM instead of Deloitte
Or Capgemini...
Unlikely jump. If you had your pick (and F500 does), would you hire a tech consultant or a strategy consultant for a strategy role?
Subject Expert
I’m currently reviewing resumes for corporate strategy openings in industry and you’re right, we always reject the tech consultants. It’s competitive — There’s just a lot of strategy consultants out there who have the strategy experience already.
Are you doing a lateral move? What strategy experience do you have? Can you describe your tech experience so far?
And I’m looking for F500 strategy/operations groups for better WLB and more interesting work. Tech just isn’t for me
Switching now is the hardest it has been in 10 years. Your 3 best bets:
1. Network to a new place within Deloitte.
2. Transition to a role with similar tech management skills in industry, if it advances your goals. Imagine customer success management roles at software companies.
3. If relevant for your career stage, go to business school to change careers.
I would emphasize that Strat work you’ve done and minimize your tech work in your resume.
Or try and get on a Strat project and gain experience that way.
CapG1: I know at most of the firms I have worked for allow you to network into most practices, outside the ones that call for specific industry/ functional knowledge (like CPA). But I having never worked for their firm...so I maybe wrong.
