Just own it. People will be impressed. Promise. If you’re spiritually fit, you can go anywhere and do anything. Including boozy work functions. Just remember — 5 awkward sober minutes at a party is so much better than a lifetime of drunk misery. Anyway, proud of you my friend!
I remind myself that if I lose an opportunity because I don't drink or have trouble making friends because of my sobriety is alright. I wouldn't have opportunities or friends if I was drinking anyway. right now you're weeding out the people and situations that won't work for you but you have an infinite amount of opportunities sober. hang in there
Try to be confident about your choice. I find most people don’t care when I don’t drink so long as they can still do what they want without feeling like I’m judging. I’m so much happier when I’m not drinking, so that’s what motivates me to keep going.
One thing that helped me connect was to tell them I could always be their driver and bring them a drink. They immediately realize you aren't judging and could be helpful. :-) designated driver for life.
I dont drink, simply because it does nothing for me and it's unhealthy. Don't let this industry dictate your health. Screw them and find someone to hang with at social gatherings who "gets it". It's insane how much people pressure you to drink. Your health, your rules. Plain and simple.
I don't drink either but stopped drinking while at this company. (has a lot more to do with mental health and medications I'm on, but the reasoning doesn't matter). Be open, be honest and find other things - coffee, lunch dates, fitness - and you'll find your niche.
Bitters and soda. Looks like a cocktail when served in a high ball glass
You’re doing what’s best for you and it really has nothing to do with anyone else, just as their life choices are not about you. Drinking or not, you’ll run into assholes and anyone who “frowns” on not drinking is just that. Be true to yourself
Agree with what everyone is saying. You don’t need to drink to connect w people professionally or otherwise. If you think you do, it’s very likely it’s your alcoholism talking, trying to get you to a drink My career has soared since I stopped drinking and the few opportunities I MIGHT have lost bc I didn’t drink were not worth having
Yeah, that’s called peer-pressure. But the truth is that people really don’t care if you drink or not. With or around my co-workers, I’ll nurse a ginger ale or a seltzer water all night long. If you haven’t, try doing that. And double up on meetings.
