In your experience, how much value do you get out of getting a CMA license? Looking to get into more outsourced CFO/management consulting work at my firm, and I’m looking into getting my CMA to at least develop a solid foundation for my skill set in that arena.

This is a very broad question so any input is appreciated!

CMA is pretty useless as a certification. If you're getting it to boost your resume, it's not worth it.

The value of it comes from the cost accounting stuff you learn from studying. But honestly, you can learn that stuff elsewhere without actually taking an exam.

helpful

Thanks! I care more about the content and what I would learn from studying than the certification itself. I’m not big on getting certifications outside of my CPA license. I’ll see what other resources there are and evaluate from there.

I have both cpa and cma. I don’t recommend cma at all. The good thing is in my state the cpes overlap

I know it’s way better than the work I do now, so I’m not knocking MBB at all. It’s super impressive. Maybe a better way to phrase it is that MBA applicants seem to have a fairy tale view of consulting as a whole. I get the impression that people think a job in consulting is a magic ticket anywhere
