The problem with how big corporations are that even if your boss and his director approves of the raise, HR can still deny and often times they do deny raises that are merit based. They need to redefine the role or provide an updated job function for the raise to be accepted into the HR system. That's why for those who know, your negotiated starting salary is critical and important to your compensation if you plan on long term tenure.
Totally agree that wanting market pay is valid. What usually gives it away is when answers focus only on compensation or title, with little curiosity about the work, team, or problems to solve. Strong candidates talk about growth, impact, and learning first, and see pay as part of the picture, not the whole reason.
