Interested to hear how people learn project management. I have done PRINCE2 exam and read PMP materials, but I find these are too textbook theory based. Real life projects seem to be very different and a lot more complicated. I often do not know what needs to be done unless someone tells me. I believe you can learn these things on the job, but I am keen to expedite this with some books or courses. Are there any resources that are particularly helpful?

I have done a degree in PM, certifications, courses and still feel I am not well equipped to handle a project. I struggle and am willing to admit it.

To answer your question, the best way to learn PM is to work in projects. Apply the theory from material you’ve read to your project. Try to proactively list specific PM tools and techniques and have it available to you daily. See it, apply it, learn whether it works.

I suggest going to YouTube and searching up PM in consulting and can guarantee you will find helpful information.

The best PMs I have worked with and for not only grasp the theory and engage in the resources - they just do a ton of PM work and learn / adapt along the way. The hardest trait to find in a great PM is someone who can flex to the specific needs and evolving conditions on the project, but holds the line on critical decisions that put the program at material risk.

As a general response to "I often do not know what needs to be done unless someone tells me" I think it is unlikely you are going to find a book or course that provides all of those answers - projects and clients rarely fit into chapters that are capture cleanly enough in a book. I personally think you may just need to get more comfortable making a decision where there isn't a direct 'textbook' answer and learn from the outcomes of your decisions.

If you find a project where you can shadow as. Secondary PM and do you work plus help PM out you will learn quicker.
As said earlier not everything is written in the book. The templates can help to create documents but all large IT and non IT companies have their own template and risk assessment strategies. So search internally and you will find a way to start and manage projects.

The PMP can teach you most management terms / skills / ideas you need to know. The more important part of management is the people aspect which is not something as easily teachable. How do you manage struggling team members, different personalities, unruly clients? These are the truly valuable soft skills a manager needs for a project.

So someone I know asked HR about a boot policy. When he found out that there wasn’t one, but his boss said there was (who gave the guys $ for boots and the claimed it on his expense reimbursements as something else) the boss got mad at him for askingHR (and in trouble for the expense reimbursements) and then 2 days later laid off my friend. There appears to be no notice of bad performance and this person always was the first person on the job site ready to work. Thoughts?
