Won't know until you try. It's not like you need to manage incrementally larger and larger teams with each new role, you just gotta do it. Especially if you feel ready to move up.
Edit: but yeah, 12 direct reports sounds like a nightmare for anyone. You're gonna be more like a babysitter.
12 direct reports?!
Sorry, that’s too much for anyone at any level IMO
I didn’t find it that hard going from 3 to 12 (assuming there are multiple layers in the 12... so no more than half of that reporting directly to me). Going from 25 to 100 was hard because I had to start doing a lot more leadership in the form of presenting to a big group vs talking individually with everyone.
I have 6 directs and it’s...a lot.
My manager does too. Trust me, your linees also feel it.
Chief
how many of the 12 are direct ?
So they say 3 hours is the optimum amount of contact time with your manager per week (this includes 121s but also broader project work etc). If you wanted to achieve that with a team of 12 you'd have to work six days a week.
Even if you spend an hour with each of them per fortnight, that's a day a week.
Are all 12 at the same level? Could you break them into more of a hierarchy, with (e.g.) 3 people reporting to you, and each of them managing a team of 3?
I think the stat (which I've only heard by hearsay) originated well outside an agency model. I spend most of my time working with or "reporting to" accounts folks. But yeah I think a lot of it is opportunities for linees to observe their line manager, see how they troubleshoot, and see what the line manager's job is actually like. If you don't get that, you can't really ever start performing consistently above your station.
Lmao my manager at my old job (SVP) couldn’t even manage ONE (1) direct report
I have a team of 50+ people and 5 direct reports. If you have 12 direct reports this isn’t correct esp for your level. It may be 4 direct reports with 12 people overall.
In all honesty managing large teams isn’t something you should aspire to and most people aren’t capable of doing it successfully
I’ve found 5 direct reports to one manager is the most efficient way to manage a team.
