Don't do it.
A boss can make or break your job. Consider it a red flag, especially if you want to grow there.
You’re in an elite job already, your criteria should be either “Fuck yes” or “no.” Don’t compromise for your first exit, if you have doubts now they’ll only get worse.
Don’t do it. Your gut is telling me to tell you it’s not worth it and you won’t last any longer than 8 miserable months
Pick your boss, not your job. Move on
this is most unfortunate - it’s hard not to get blinded by an attraction to a specific role and/or organization, but a direct supervisor is so critical to short-, medium-, and long-term success, that it’s probably the most important factor to consider as a potential red flag - this is the person that you will report to on a daily basis, that is most likely to become your mentor, should be your biggest champion, and has the biggest impact on your career path forward - it’s a given that all new endeavors come with noteworthy risk, so i’m not entirely opposed to the jump, but tread carefully...
Trust your gut.
My biggest professional mistake was not trusting my gut regarding my boss on a new job.
There are some bosses that, despite your best efforts, will never see you as successful and will block your progress. Considering your boss is the heaviest voice in performance reviews in most cases, tread carefully if you already do not like this person
but worried he will be a thorn in my side. He seems like he’s also easily threatened. I’ve got more expertise in this area than he does. Any advice?
How do i make sure it’s not just my imagination? Any questions i can ask to gauge his response?
Ask him how he measures success - 30 days/ 180 days/ 1 year/ 3 years out. How does he ensure his team is successful?
If you don't have anything to learn from him you shouldn't take the job.
But i have LOTS to learn from his boss and the CEO and so many others there. But you are right.
Avoid
Don't do it....
Interesting that your boss is full of himself but you’re the one who’s decided you can learn nothing from him.
know someone who admired company's CFO and got along well with her but wasn't supported by direct manager. Ended up getting a PIP out of nowhere and left less than 1 year in. as others have said - stay away, hopefully another role opens with the folks you actually want to work with
