When I first moved to NYC years ago I lived on 115k salary, paid 2.5k for a studio in Manhattan and it was doable because I didn’t have any debt or spouse/kids. A comparable studio is 3.5k these days.
When you determine affordability, look at your debt vs net income. Then compare remaining funds vs apartment prices and living costs. There is an income calculator online that shows NYC and NJ tax.
If you’re single, live in NYC. Don’t spend your time commuting.
Thanks! Can you send a link to that NY / NJ calculator?
You'll generally struggle in life if you don't know how to make 175k work if you're single lol

This must be why the birth rate is so low. All the poor people can’t afford to date.
Yes, you can be comfortable, but you can’t go wild. You can afford $4,375/month in rent, maximum.
Dont pay that much for rent. When I was making 170k my rent was $1800 after moving out of a $2600 one bedroom. The more you save on rent the more comfortably and stressfree you can live.
I don’t understand why people ask questions like this, what’s considered comfortable or struggling is highly subjective, other people’s opinions are meaningless.
Ignore gs1 he wants to be difficult for the sake of being difficult
Yes, you can eat out where you want, live alone and have amenities in your building such as an elevator and in unit W/D (yes all of these are seen as luxuries in Manhattan). As well as actually invest and grow your wealth. Basically you’ll be living slightly better than a normal person anywhere else, but you’ll also be having much better experiences than everyone else.
What many people overlook when they move here is that they’re paying for the culture of the city itself. Nowhere else in the country can you be surrounded by as much culture, success, and fun all in one place.
Yeah life is a little harder here than most other cities, but whatever you give to the city it will give back to you and more.
At 175k you can afford to eat out have a decent apartment and pretty much do what you want if you have a budget so. You won’t be living of instant ramen and off brand Kraft Mac and cheese in a tiny walk up with mice worrying how you will afford to go to the doctor with 3 roommates, but you may not have a penthouse apartment with a rock climbing wall and infinity pool. Does that answer your question?
They won't film a romantic comedy movie about your story of struggling to make it in the big city. You'll be living fine in a nice 1 br in Queens. Only if you choose to live in Manhattan by yourself will you potentially be struggling.
You’ll be okay but you won’t be impressing any women. I set a rule now where I won’t even agree to meet with guys (friends or dating) if they’re not paying for me bc all my female friends starting doing the same.

It'll be comfortable. Speaking from the North Jersey angle, once you crack past $100k things become a bit less stressful.
It might depend on a few things:
- Do you own or rent, and if you own, is it a coop or condo? I assume it is not a brownstone, or you wouldn't have to ask.
- Where do you want to live? Some areas are pricier than others, and how much space do you expect?
- What's your income potential? If you plan on earning significantly more, then short-term belt-tightening is tolerable.
- Do you expect to have a partner? Once you share space, moving in with a sexual partner or spouse, proportionate expenses drop significantly.
- What are your expectations for dining, health club, and travel?
You’ll be struggling to pick between a which suit you want to wear to work or which sushi you buy while slaving away on pitchbooks at night.
