Is consulting a good exit path? I’m being courted by a couple of advisory firms (think strategy-lite and transformation work), but part of me worries it’s just trading one flavor of burnout for another. I don’t want to jump from busy season into client chaos with more travel and less control. But I also don’t want to miss out on learning new skill sets and expanding my exposure.

I’ve doing this for a good number of years. I think I depleted almost completely my interest in this business. When I’m out of the office or during the weekends I get into a “leave me alone state” and don’t want to know anything about the office. I actually just want to get in the agency, do the best I can within the time I have available, and get out. In a business where “the most committed wins” this is not an ideal mindset, but I’m done. I started a full time in-house design job that pays extremely well. I barely have to work at all. This makes me very confused since I kept hearing stories of people working 60+ hr weeks as designers at ad agencies. I am not complaining, but I have this creeping irrational feeling that I’ll get fired for not working even though there’s nothing for me to do. Should i be making up projects or asking for more work?
