Dallas isn’t bad, but what are you driving for $1k/mo?????
I have a 2021 S4 I bought new for $60k. I was making 120 and my net worth was less than yours. You'll be fine paying rent in Dallas and having a new car, but it will definitely impact your savings. I'm in my 30s and insurance is nearly 2-300 a month... gas is expensive... it adds up. So consider your savings plan.
That said, if you'd just be spending that $ on rent instead ... 🤷🏼♂️

Illinois has 4.95% state tax, Texas has 0%. ~$6.5K saved in taxes, or about $540 every month, which you can divert towards that $1K monthly car payment ;)
No, it’s in place of the car payment. Public transport or Uber/taxi everywhere. Would it add up to $12k? Who knows? But having a $1k /month car payment at your age and salary is insane.
If you get a girl pregnant in Chicago, she can easily access the abortion pill or clinic. In Texas, you’d have to drive her across state lines (no clinics allowed) and it’s a felony to “aid and abet” a criminal, so you risk jail time.
If you’re gay this won’t matter… but if you’re straight it’s something to think about.
@EY - it seems like we’ve had very different experiences and so I’m just gonna leave this be because we’re definitely not going to agree.
Chicago all day
I hear you. I lived at Lofts at the Ballpark for a bit when I moved back and by the time I walked to my car my light blue shirts would be dark blue.
But don’t be mistaken, it gets plenty hot and humid in Chicago during the summer. It’s just a much briefer steam room season
A life without a car would be much more enjoyable.
I disagree. Can’t stand having to rely on public transportation or being around other people on a subway or bus.
I’ve lived in London so I’ve experienced arguably the best subway system in the world and I still vastly prefer my car in Dallas
Rising Star
I’ve lived in both. If you’re gay or into ambitious women, Chicago has a much better dating pool. If you like the more plastic look, Dallas. I don’t really think Dallas is a good deal anymore and would never move back nowadays
Chicago. Live anywhere but Texas.
Good riddance
Chicago over Dallas. You're young... Enjoy it
You’ve lived in Austin . Dallas is worse in every bit except for indian restaurants. Chicago vote++

Chicago has some pretty fine Indian restaurants too. And unlike Dallas, it also has culture.
I wouldn’t personally move to Chicago if you tripled my compensation. The city is on the decline and run by degenerates. But at 130k comp I also wouldn’t spend 1k/month on a car. By the time you factor insurance and maintenance you’re talking about spending 15% of your take home pay on a car
Not sure. Never paid any attention to them.

Chicago over Dallas in a heartbeat, but not just because of the car. Or just live in Mew York and enjoy life.
Chicago is a lot of fun!
It’s a world-class city with a relatively low cost of living compared to New York or LA. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods and each one has unique pockets of culture and characteristics. The food scene is incredible. No matter what kind of nightlife you’re into there is a scene for you here. The beaches and weekend trips to MI or WI are seriously underrated. There’s something about Chicago that just feels like home to me (and a lot of other people on this thread). Illinois also has a functioning electric grid!
If you REALLY need a BMW buy it used.
Rising Star
Because it’s designed to break
Those options are not MECE. Try again.
You're a young, single guy. Move to the big, dense, exciting yet moderately priced city of Chicago. Or try NYC if you want to go big.
Have fun for a few years and move back to Texas when you either get tired of the dense city and want to settle down.
Don't stay in your home state and overspend on a car. Move out and adventure a little.
Is your only option to pay that much for a car?seems excessive
Pro
I lived in Chicago in mid 20s and it was a great place to be single. 0 regrets. Easy to meet people. Never a boring weekend and always fun things to do. If you can handle the cold weather, I would give it a whirl… you can always leave if it is not for you
I would not pay $1k for a car payment at that age and salary. I do right now, but I’m mid 30’s with with dual income and kids and am paying that much for a hybrid Volvo 3-row SUV versus a sports car. I can’t even imagine being 24 and being handcuffed with that kind of financial burden.
Maybe it’s just me but I found Dallas boring, but I’ve always had a ton of fun in Chicago. If you’re young, Chicago is the place to be
Chief
It’s not just you. Dallas is boring…all cities in TX are compared to actual cities.
I know plenty of people who moved from Chicago to Austin, but 0 the other way. Chicago is not a great place lol. This Dallas it is
