Nope, I always ask why the role is available, is it because the company is growing or for other reasons and they’ve been candid with me for the most part.
Nah you should ask the recruiter in the first call
Pro tip: instead of putting them on the defensive about recent layoffs, try to keep it forward facing. For example: “it’s been a tough year for everyone- with most of the uncertainties still unresolved (Toronto just went into lockdown again this week while the UK is easing up), how is the business planning for suboptimal scenarios where spend across your clients takes another dip?”
Also, don’t bother asking at the screening phase because your recruiter gateway guards won’t be able to answer. That’s a question for the hiring manager.
What is the question though? If you’re asking about the company’s financial stability, then that is a very good question to ask. Several months ago a friend was hired and then fired shortly after due to budget reasons. So just because the hire was approved doesn’t mean anything
I’ve been hiring a lot lately and it’s been asked of me a lot too. I haven’t been turned off by it. Most of the time it comes across as an innocent question like “how has your agency dealt with the pandemic / how hard did it impact budgets or staffing” and I would want to know the same.
Yes asked directly very much so, it’s an off put question.
But asked strategically is a different ball game, for example, you can ask:
“With the recent changes in your company, how have you and your team needed to change to meet the business needs?”
“Has it effected the teams morale on being able to do great work and collaborate together with a more leaner team or has this experience brought everyone closer together? “
Be diplomatic about it, but absolutely see what the answer is. If they don't have a good answer, either the situation is worse than you've heard or you're dealing with someone who is too incompetent to do their job properly.
