Is it frowned upon to have a nice watch as an associate? I was wearing a very average watch and got called out for “ice on my wrist”by a director with a casio

My MD calls me out all the time for wearing expensive watches and shoes since he came from a humble background. I simply don’t care except I actually give him advise on how to dress better and enjoy life. Funny thing is he just got a YM through an AD I know. So I guess just be confident and be yourself.

Who cares what others think. If I saw an associate wear a nice watch I would appreciate it and think this person is into watches. However if it’s Rolex I would assume this person is a follower and knows nothing about watches. I appreciate it more when someone is wearing a non- Rolex. If it’s an AP or Patek or VC I would think either he/she is well to do but who cares.

I have had nice time pieces since I was a senior consultant and moved up in my career. I didn’t care if my pieces were better than Partners. It was a passion I had and sure I spent a decent amount of money but I was always smart when and how I spent it.

I feel that point on Rolex. Met someone a couple weeks back who was wearing sub (allegedly got as a gift) and he didn’t care much about watches other than if they were expensive and recognizable (though he also thought my bb58 was a Rolex so there’s that)

I wear my Rolex GMT without thinking twice as an associate

like

My ceo wears a Pepsi. I don't think he would appreciate the new entry level hire to be wearing the same watch lol

What is the average watch you have? Unless it has diamonds then it isn’t ice

I wouldn’t wear something that’s very obviously a Rolex (i.e. Sub/GMT/fluted Datejust). Pretty much everything else is fair game, I think.

I’ve had an intern on my team once who wore a gold IWC Portugieser (probably a 20K+ watch). Nobody in the building knew what it was except for me I think. And I in all truthfulness I was actually jealous, and not passing judgment, just wishing I could afford one of those at that age.

When you come to think of it, the difference between a Patek Calatrava and some random $300 Hugo Boss watch is zero to the untrained eye. Very few people will even notice.

Disclaimer: I am not a consultant - all non-partner attorneys are called associates and I’m not so junior anymore.

likefunny

To me it depends on the project. I don’t want a Rolex on the wrist on a cost cutting project / layoffs. Bad optics.

On the other hand for a growth / product launch / marketing you be you.

like

Senior Analyst. I wear a Tudor ($4k) and feel like it’s appropriate

like

I usually wear a YG Daytona to the office. One day I wore my Patek Perpetual Calendar (which Cost twice as much) and my boss commented “why aren’t you wearing the pretty watch today”
But that’s the only time I’ve gotten comments on my watch.

funnylike

I bet it runs on a thermostatic movement :)

so I’d say it’s probably inappropriate to wear something like a yellow gold day date to the office as a junior- that’s an extraordinarily flashy watch.

But stuff like the more subtle rolexes / omegas I don’t think anybody cares about.

Long story short- use your judgement and wear watches when appropriate, you don’t want to be seen as showing off or displaying unnecessary wealth- especially at a client site

like

Also the watch I was wearing was like a $500 designer watch

Can we see a photo? Curious if they just knew nothing about watches and just thought it looked flashy haha

I’m an associate and wear a Tag Heuer Aquaracer. I think it strikes the perfect balance between classy and “luxury” but not too expensive or loud that people just think you’re an asshole

like

Nice! Tbh I have an affinity for Tag. My father was never a big watch guy but for whatever reason he loved Tag Heuer. I have memories of being in airport shops and malls with him and he would always stop and look at the Tag models. He was never a big spender so he never bought one for himself. When it was time for me to buy my first entry level luxury watch, I knew Tag is what I wanted to get. Brings back great memories of me with my dad :)

like

I had an intern who wore a Cartier Ballon Bleu everyday. He was French and came from a very wealthy family, so he had a nice watch at a young age - that's it. He showed up on time and did a great job in his work, which at the end of the day, is all that I or anyone else should care about.

what casio is getting called out for having ice?

Depends. There’s something to be said for both discretion and wearing what interests you - what were you wearing that prompted the comment?

I was thinking of getting a stainless steel day date / datejust. So that’s why I asked. Not a flashy person but do appreciate the craftsmanship of watches

24 year old and I wear a 3k Longines or a 4K baume mercier. Only thing come of it is a ‘nice watch’ compliment. I’ve spoken to higher ups with Daytona’s or santos or jlc’s saying nice watch. Good convo starter

like

I have a Rolex submariner but I only wear Apple Watch at work

like

Don’t wear it to a client where they are doing a big cost cutting push, other than that who cares.

I used to wear my ceramic Daytona to the office as a sr. Analyst. Got a few comments about it but for the most part, no one cared

You are right 90% won’t care or know what kind of watch it is. Some will give more compliments to a Michael Kors watch if one is wearing haha. You wear it because you enjoy it!

Liking one senior member on the team (who’s been my mentor) & I have started overthinking about this super genius man & I feel less confident when he’s around. This is impacting my work :(

Hi There - I work for an organization that has retail locations. I had the team lead call me this morning (a Saturday) because he had to send a new employee home. The employee he sent home had a mental health episode shortly after arriving to work. The team lead had asked him to be on order taking duty to work on the new employee's customer service skills. The employee said he could not interact with people today and when pressed further started to cry and said he (new employee) felt like he wanted to hurt someone else or himself. The team lead had the new employee call someone to come pick him up.

My question is, has anyone else ever had to deal with a similar situation in the pas where an employee admits he could be a danger to himself or others?

I’ve been working for a small investment firm for about a year and am having some issues with my boss. We have a weekly check-in but he’s ALWAYS 2-3 hours late, or skips the meeting altogether without warning. He also never replies to any of the emails I send. I already spoke with him about these issues, but things haven’t really changed. I really like the work I do but I’m starting to feel frustrated about the situation. Any advice? Or anyone else in a similar situation?

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

For you experts... I’m a first-timer (pun!) buying lux watches. I’m looking at an updated model of a JSC (geographic), to be released sometime Q4 this year. MSRP is 12k few questions:
1) what is realistic price ballpark from an AD (I’m not in a hurry)
2) any advice for reaching out to ADs, especially given this isn’t yet released? I.e., any common mistakes to avoid?
3) MSRP includes leather strap, and looking at current model prices, metal strap adds ~2k to price. Sound right?

Thank you all!
