Define “poor performance”
I personally would wait until I had the skills and experience to apply to another job, one level up. You need to distance yourself from the poor performance. Doing a lateral move sort of reinforces their impression that you're not able to be successful as a junior consultant, with the assumption that you're jumping ship before a promotion because things aren't going great at your current firm.
Lots of opportunities in the world. Why would you want to circle back to a place where you’ve already had issues?
Move on.
It’s been nearly two years and I genuinely enjoyed all the people, culture and work of the firm I was at. I felt that I was unfairly mis-evaluated by an impatient manager who viewed the PD of an intern as a waste of his time. I have since developed the awareness and adaptability to deal with these kind of managers.
How long has it been since the internship? Is the open role the exact role you didn’t get an offer for at the end of the internship? If not, same office? Are you cool with the recruiter?
