Possibleon the finance side or the compliance side?
Finance: Yes. Likely, no. Generally, if there's a chance at all, it's after you've done deal work (m&a, equity capital markets).
Compliance: Yes, likelihood much, much higher. The kids from my school who barely passed law school all went to compliance at financial institutions.
Definitely helpful insight! Thanks for sharing A1!
Even most top MBA students aren’t receiving return offers right now. Breaking into IB in this market without years of direct relevant experience will be VERY hard.
I would think you would have a hard time doing anything on the finance side without doing some graduate work in finance...
A t30 law school really won’t impress people for those positions. It’s difficult to transition from a t10 law school, starting at a v10 law firm (Kirkland/STB) and those are their go-to law firms.
I would get an MBA from an M7 (top 7 business school). Being a lawyer may make you competitive at some of those schools. An elite MBA degree with some legal experience may make you a unique candidate—especially if you had some experience at a big law firm prior to business school. That would be your best bet for an investment banking position because those positions are fiercely competitive.
