You serious, Clark?
Yes - would be much easier if you had law firm experience prior to your in house role
Yes, and vice versa. But working in a law firm will be a big adjustment not just because of the work but also because of the overwhelming difference in personalities that you will encounter. Just curious, why do you want to work in a law firm? In house is so much better IMO.
Personally I’ve been thinking about it for family planning. It pays a bit more and the bonuses are much bigger imo, though I would admit that compared to friends who went to firms it feels like I virtually do nothing so that’s something to consider
It is possible, it's not always easy. I'm not sure if this app has a message feature, but I'm happy to discuss my experience with you if you would like.
I was in a small legal department with out much room for growth. The company was also not a good fit, I was hired for transactional work and then expected to litigate.
Yep. That’s what I did. Definitely a big adjustment going from in-house into private practice.
Not OP, but I also experienced a big adjustment when I made the move from in-house to private. The biggest changes for me are: business development expectations, lack of formal management structure (answering to multiple partners, but no real boss) , and needing to be the expert in the situation (instead of farming out complex issues to outside counsel). And of course billables.
On the plus side, it is so nice to have the resources like lexis AND west law without hitting paywalls because of subscription level, and access to other legal resources that companies won't usually pay for, a firm database to pull examples from, and generally, biz/attorney client contacts want your advice - rather than often being seen as the internal roadblock.
I would say this market is really tough, the opportunities are squeezed and competition is fierce. Depending on your level, might be better to wait until September ish
Yes, I went back to BL after being in-house.
Maybe the transactional side is different, but in the litigation world it’s really hard if you don’t already have firm experience. I managed to do it, but it was really tricky, particularly since competitor peers often had experience in a firm.
