Is it worth a pay decrease to make the leap from agency to brand? I’m looking into a brand manager role but it’s $10-20k below my current base and nearly $40k below with incentives. Obviously a personal decision, etc... just wondering if the lower stress level and more mature culture is truly that much better to offset the compensation gap.

I would not recommend it. As an agency guy who went brand side I can assure you the headaches are still there... different, yes... but still there. And you should get very near the same compensation, or more with bonus.

If shit’s bad where you are indeed leave, but you deserve what you deserve. Never sell yourself short, or let corporate America do it for you.

God’s speed my friend.

I’ve been on the brand side and the agency side. Money is definitely better on agency side. Less stress on the agency side as well. More stress on brand side cuz of the red tape and too many non-marketing people making marketing decisions. Good luck.

Great insight! Those are all things in comfortable with so will make note to highlight that experience on my resume.

And totally agree... consumer is king/queen. No success for anyone if the products aren’t getting bought.

I was in brand side for ten years. Now agency. I love it! Not worth it unless it’s a brand that you are dying to get in the door.

like

Unpopular opinion — but the two jobs require very different skill sets. A brand manager has to run a business from soup to nuts. A strategist gets to do just the fun parts. Income upside is much greater in Brand Strategy. Many more jobs. Unless you go freelance in strategy.

likesmart

The difference is skill sets and long-term upside are the main reasons I was drawn to it. Need a different challenge, and once “brand manager” is on your resume it feels like you can walk in and demand any senior role you’d like (I know in exaggerating).

like

If the compensation on the brand side opportunity is less, you may be looking at too junior of a position or a company where marketing people are not considered the part of the company that really drives differential results. Places where marketing is key pay very well, especially with incentives.

Look for companies & opportunities where brand marketing is considered a true “line” function vs “staff”. Otherwise, you will get frustrated. The choice between brand & agency side today is based on your personality & the role of the brand position within a client’s org structure.

Hope this is helpful.

likesmarthelpful

Definitely helpful and I’ve noticed this in some of the “brand manager” positions I’ve reviewed. They were clear that they consider this a more senior role, and the salary for the role isn’t anemic - it’s still six figures in the Midwest - just not quite as lucrative as my current role and some of their larger competitors.

I wonder if it’s more the latter of what you are saying - maybe they just don’t consider marketing as that true difference maker. From the conversation I had with the recruiter, sounded like they run pretty lean despite being a category leader. They took a lot of pride in that and the bonus structure was non-negotiable, so I think your assessment might be correct.

Who lied to you and told you it would be lower stress. Why do you think the clients stress you? I’m here to tell you.... that type of pay cut, you are coming in at the wrong level. Fight for the SBM roles!

like

It’s actually not the clients who stress me, it’s internal and mostly lack of headcount driven at the two agencies I’ve worked at. Clients are actually mostly good to work with. Obviously there is stress on the brand side as well, totally get that.

like

I made the switch from agency to brand years ago and never looked back. If you’re a person who puts 110% into what you do, the stress isn’t going to go away. But if you find the right position, leader and company- the growth potential is way higher on brand side.

On the agency side you are thought of as an expert and your clients respect you for that. This isn’t the case on the brand side so it can get frustrating. However, there are many more opportunities for advancement and leadership. Again, it’s about finding the right fit for you-where you will thrive.

Good luck!

This. Whenever a doctor or someone else asks me “do you have a stressful job?” I’m like... what job isn’t stressful? Unless you just don’t care every job is stressful.

I’m really finding it tough to land a brand gig but I do think I would enjoy it. The one interview I got was this one, and that is because I knew someone at the company. Can’t get the time of day elsewhere even with a strong resume and senior title.

like

If you’re going brand Side the pay should be significantly better. Not sure what the deal is with this offer but it sounds sus.

Having been out of the agency world for a few years now, I can’t think of a single reason to go back. Would love to hear counter arguments.

like

I think it’s mostly because this role was at a private company and didn’t have the money of other publicly funded companies. Not suspect, it’s a highly reputable brand.

The main counter argument, in my mind, is quick growth potential. You can skyrocket on the agency side if you get in while they are hitting a growth spurt. Most well-established CPGs aren’t going to have that growth and need to elevate folks quickly. Given the choice I’d still like to be on the brand side, but maybe the grass is always greener... won’t know until I (hopefully) get there.

Ok you all have been insanely awesome with these responses. I am very inactive on social media generally because people suck most of the time, but you are restoring my faith in humanity with all of this encouragement and positivity.

My question to you now is... how? Making this leap seems heavily predicated on networking. Any COVID-safe networking tips? Would any of you awesome folks like to connect? If so, DM me.

like

I’m brand side (brand manager) - came from agency media buying. My recommendation is to lead with numbers in your resume - awareness % growth, YOY revenue growth, conversion metrics. Brands care way more about this than agencies do.

For an open brand manager role we have, we’re getting a 50/50 mix of agency people looking to go brand side and young MBAs with consulting backgrounds. To me, the way an agency person stands out is through those proof metrics where MBAs typically have the education but lack the experience.

like

I’d be very cautious about going anywhere for what might be significantly less... unless it’s a full pivot into a truly new world.

Most agency people I’ve seen go brand require a good two years to adjust to the truth of real partnership — rather than the lip service agencies pay it.
