Is the grass greener on the Booz Allen/Deloitte/McKinsey/consulting side or the Lockheed/Boeing/Raytheon/prime contractor side? Pros and cons? Salary, WLB, benefits, career growth, etc.

Currently an SC with 8YOE and $90k salary - not engineering 🙂 Weighing an offer within the latter group for roughly $10k more, and not sure if it’s worth the move… Looking for advice from anyone with operational knowledge!

8YOE and 90k?! Are you at Booz too, my friend.

Idk which is better, but I would certainly explore other opportunities, even if it's just to leverage for more money at your current company. The grass is green where you water it. There will always be a give and take. Decide what's most important to you (salary, WLB, career growth, flexible schedule, benefits, etc.) and find companies that best support that goal.

I wouldn't move for 10k. See if your company can match that.

BAH is going to be much similar to the prime contractor side of things than Deloitte or McKinsey. Deloitte Federal will also be closer to prime contractor than McKinsey will be. Growth within prime contractor space will be slower, salary too, but WLB will be significantly better, 45+ hour weeks are uncommon. Benefits usually fine but not outstanding.

All that said, I’m not sure that I’d take a move for only 11% raise unless you’re really looking to switch. Push for a match at your current firm and then leave for a bigger raise down the road.

Joined Lockheed and let me tell you, the WLB is incredible

Mind if I DM you about your experience at LM?

BAH/Deloitte/etc. for sure. I’m a non engineering person at Deloitte with 3 yoe and my base is 130k and bonus was 20k last year. Even 100k is insanely underpaid for 8yoe in consulting.

like

Prime Contractors, in my experience, work less than 40hrs/week, and are paid a pittance compared to consultants

like

Can confirm, made the jump from Lockheed to EYP. Many more hours but significantly more pay

You are SEVERELY underpaid 😢

Comp will largely depend on the role. As others have said, you're typically going to make more in consulting but pay for it in WLB.

If you're making the jump to industry and want to maximize comp, look for roles where you have (or can grow into) product ownership. Think program management, finance, strategy/bus development, or similar. These will be more stressful, but WLB is still great compared to what I've seen in consulting.

Career growth, again, will depend on the role and the company. Look at company performance, earnings reports, and dig around for specific news about the branch/program you'd be supporting. The better set a certain division is for the future, the more growth opportunity downstream.

Feel free to DM me with questions. For reference I've got 7 YOE at Boeing, making ~145 TC.

Been with company for 2.5 years in a SFA role, and they just let me hire an associate financial analyst reporting into me. My manager never mentioned anything in regards to a promotion, but when I asked, I was told that there will be an evaluation period before any promotion is given. Has anyone else had this before, where you are managing someone but they don’t give you a promotion? Sounds bizarre to me that they allow me to hire someone but then are hesitant to promote.

Thinking of moving from B4 to Accenture or Slalom. I mostly do Epic stuff. Pros seem to be no audit/independence crap, less travel, more tech work. Any cons?

Advice needed on handing in notice, I recently signed an offer letter and understand the screening process takes 4-6 weeks. I have a month's notice period and have agreed a preliminary start date in Feb.

I was planning on not handing my notice in until the checks had been completed so its all secured (not that I think I will fail any checks), but apparently I need a reference from my current employer not previous ones. Can't really do this without handing in notice can I?
