Italian reds are best vs other reds or vs Italian whites? If you’re contending the first you’re in for a very long conversation with a lot of subjectivity - especially using a BdM. Personally I never go for these as have a pet hate for Sangiovese. In terms of Italian reds I think there are a range of “better” wines in most regions (Langhe, Veneto and Tuscany) as well as some lovely stuff from Sardinia and Sicily, the latter usually being great value.
More broadly speaking there are a number of outstanding Spanish wines, but for sheer quality it’s very hard to touch a decent vintage first growth Bordeaux. Sadly it’s almost impossible unless you go to the online market to get good Californian wines in Europe but I have a massive soft spot for Caymus.
