Best resources for mental health among cops?
My father passed away last week. I had wills written up for him, he has a small c corp, and we don’t live in a community property state. Mom’s still with us, fortunately.
Besides informing social security, filing a life insurance claim, getting a death certificate, flagging his credit card, and starting the probate process, is there anything else I need to do immediately (in a financial/regulatory sense)?
I’ve been following the guide here: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/wiki/death_of_loved_one/ but others guidance is always appreciated.

Disability insurance is generally worth it. If you fall ill and can’t work you would definitely be grateful for the income
Life insurance is often best to do yourself if you can get a good term life policy it will cover you for 20 years+
Ad&d isn’t really required. It may help with the shock of a sudden disability or death, but not really that valuable if you have good coverage elsewhere. Usually it’s pretty cheap tho.
I always get disability insurance. And I am realy glad I did. I am out on FMLA now and going to be using my STD.

I always take the disability… it’s cheap versus a private plan… life insurance I always buy whatever I can without a medical certification… you can buy life insurance on your own, but some plans are portable if you leave the firm… AD&D, is if you were to die in an accident (fall off a ladder hanging Christmas lights), the plan pays out… or if you lose your hand… the plan pays out a lump sum…
Depending on your age, statistically if you’re under 50, the odds of your death are higher for an accident versus critical illness…
Speaking of critical illness, if they have a policy for that, I’d take it as well… and if they have a hospitalization plan, I’d take that one too…
I’m overprotected by a significant amount, but you never know what’s around the corner or behind the door… and at my firm, all of these coverages maybe cost me $25-$30 a pay period…
That’s typical for long and short term disability, just make sure you pay for the premium after tax so that you don’t get taxed on disability payments.
I would recommend searching for life insurance outside of work, it was very easy to compare rates with policygenius and cheaper than with work.
I always get accident, hospital indemnity and critical illness optional insurance with a family because the pay out on everyone getting their annual health exams is more than the cost of the insurance. That being said, I’ve also utilized the insurance for accidents and claims from random kids and adult ER or urgent care visits have more than covered costs.
