It’s Thanksgiving Eve, I just finished critical pending work at 10pm, and flipping through my emails, I find a request from 4pm for a vendor contract “every day counts, very urgent, pls do immediately.” How do I respond? I’m traveling at 9am, so I need to sleep and pack tonight. Do I take 2 hours out of Thanksgiving tomorrow? Try to get it in tonight? Tell them to pound sand until Friday/Monday?

C’mon you learned jiu-jitsu by now. Spend btwn 15 min-1 hour flagging a bunch of questions in the doc you want client to answer / accept risk on and send it back to them on a schedule send tomorrow afternoon.

Say I can get it to you by EOD Friday. Their contact, unless they’re in a diff country, is likely not going to look at it until Monday. Also, I hate people that do this shit.

like

Wait until first thing Friday? It was sent EOD today, a time when many are preparing to log off for Thanksgiving. From what you wrote above, it seems as if it can wait.

I’d say it depends on a combination of whether the late notice is their fault, the consequences, and whether you’ll have support if you ignore it until the weekend. I’d probably wake up early and do it, but if it is entirely their fault then I’d strongly consider telling them to pound sand at least until Saturday.

Ya I wouldn’t spend any of my thanksgiving on that lol

How many points? Caribbean Marriott Cat 3 property, 5 nights. They have an issue with the boiler so no hot water and shower stops in between. Ice cold showers for 4 days in a row 🥶. Hotel phones don’t work because network is down and only local channels work on tv. Last night they had a huge leak in the lobby. They kept knocking stuff all night to fix it and then left a large floor fan running. I understand it’s tough reopening so don’t want to push, plus they upgraded our room at check in.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Company is considering a re-org to put Chief Legal Officer in charge of payroll and HR Departments. Have others seen this? Thoughts?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

In a few months I will have been at my company 2 years. After talking to colleagues, friends, recruiters, I feel I am pretty underpaid for the market. When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?
