I've been covering breaking news for our local station for two years, and I'm completely burned out creatively. I used to be good at finding the personal, human elements in stories, but now I feel like I'm just going through the motions on everything. Should I ask my editor for a few weeks off to recharge, or try to work my way through this creative block?

If you have the time to take off, it could be a great way to try and get that spark back. Either way, I would say to think about what you can do to help in that. Sometimes I find that stepping outside of my normal content helps. Instead of writing, I’ll try out a new design tool (Figma has been my newest obsession!) Things like that help me shake it up and let some creative juices flow again.

I think its because the human brain was not made to havbe this information and opinions shoved into it 24/7, I fear the empathy chip is fading for many. Maybe some time away or try some new projects would do it good. A holiday and recharge can do wonders. Also try watching peoples work you admire and find inspiration elsewhere.

I have been exactly there – I hit a point where I felt like a camera with no film left. I asked for time off, and it was the best decision. Clarity needs space. You are not a machine. Ask. Recharge. Come back sharper.

What would you do if you didn’t need money? I have a fair amount coming one day and don’t actually need to work to live a good life (middle / upper-middle class). I work because of this vague notion of “ambition” and because everyone I grew up around is highly competitive and hard driving. I just feel unhappy so often and am wondering what this is all leading to. Scared I’m wasting my life being unhappy / in turmoil cause it’s what my culture wants me to do.

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female.
