A friend I’ve had a complicated relationship with (which I recently ended because of a lot of drama and mistreatment) confided recently that she is suicidal. She has no family or close friends and will not go to the hospital. I’m very unwell myself but have gone over there the past two nights. What would you do if you didn’t need money? I have a fair amount coming one day and don’t actually need to work to live a good life (middle / upper-middle class). I work because of this vague notion of “ambition” and because everyone I grew up around is highly competitive and hard driving. I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation.
