If you want to get a promotion, be prepared to make a good case for yourself. Jot down some things you've done at the job that went well. And put together a concise pitch showing how you've been successful and you've grown in the job. That narrative of improvement is important, it establishes that you're on the ascent, and there's every reason to believe you'd keep performing at a high level if you were promoted. When you're ready to make your pitch, meet with your boss and advocate for yourself.
I’ve never thought about a narrative approach to it, I’ll definitely be sure to use this thank you!!
Straight talk: Don’t ask if, ask how. Frame it like this: “I’d like to take on more leadership. What steps would I need to take in the next 3–6 months to earn that role?” Make it concrete. And don’t wait forever. If they stall or dodge, that’s your cue to start looking for a place that actually wants to grow you.
I feel like I’ve been planting these seeds for a while now so im glad to know it’s been the right thing to do. Hopefully we can have the chat properly soon and see where we’re at, looking around for something new is always on the cards too.
Your attitute and way of talking, assurance is EVERYTHING! Good luck!
Thank you!
That’s a great move—good on you for going for it. I’d suggest framing it around growth: highlight what you’ve contributed so far and how you’re ready to take on more responsibility. It helps to come with specific ideas for how you could add value in that new role. Showing you’ve thought it through makes it easier for your manager to get behind it.
Good idea, I think I’ve got some ways I could help improve the department so I’ll go at it with those!
