Leadership is a mindset. You can show leadership now. For a formal leadership role, talk to your manager and work on a plan together. Seek to understand what their prios are and how you can help with these as well as how they can support your growth
You can't stand around and wait for it to come to you. At some point you have to demonstrate potential for leadership. Step up and suggest solutions for problems, volunteer to take on jobs that need to be done, and in general just find opportunities to go above and beyond. If you do that, and do a good job of it, you'll be recognized as having what it takes. A lot of it is up to you.
I’ve never been approached for a leadership position. I’ve always asked or just started doing it. 16 years later, I’ve held a leadership or managerial role in every business I’ve been part of.
Be proactive and tell them what you want.
Have you shared your aspirations with your boss?
Ask for a promotion. When they say no, ask what you need to do to get there.
Done this for years and never get a straight answer. How do I push it forward?
Respectfully, it isn’t just a mindset there are skills that you need to be a good leader. And just because you’re a high performer doesn’t mean you’re a great leader. My first question to you OP, why do you want to be a leader?
Hi,
It’s great that you’ve been getting strong reviews! To get noticed for leadership:
Talk to Your Manager: Share your career goals and ask for advice on leadership readiness.
Show Leadership Now: Volunteer to lead projects or mentor teammates.
Ask for Feedback: Improve on leadership skills like communication or problem-solving.
Highlight Impact: Align your work with company goals to show your value.
Stay Proactive: Express interest in specific opportunities and be patient but consistent.
You’re on the right track—keep building on your strengths!
Just ask, remember if you wait to be noticed you never will. Let your leadership team know what you want to achieve, let them know what you can bring to the company as a leader and let them know of any extra tasks you've taken on. Prepare yourself for any feedback you might get (good or bad), but if you don't ask the answer will always be no. Good luck with your future.
