I've recently gotten a promotion at Google and I'm so grateful to be moving upward during this time, but it's made impossible for me to spend time with my family. Is there any way to speak to them about this and find some balance?

Congrats on promo!

100%. You need to bring this up to your manager ASAP. There shouldn’t be any pushback. I’ve found Google to be exceedingly willing to help me find better balance.
I don’t even have kids and I had this convo about burnout and long hours. My manager rejuggled my workload and we reset OKRs.

Btw there’s a Googlers bowl if you want internal advice.. just have to have Google listed as your company

Yeah, I would one hundred percent bring this up to your manager. Try and see what tasks you can get off your plate.

What are your thoughts about having to take an iq/personality assessment tests? It seems so outdated to me. I don’t think it predicts how you will truly perform at a job. I took a test like this for a startup once and they were concerned about my ability to speak up or behave in social settings. This was completely false. I present, interview clients, demo products, and facilitate meetings for a living. So what if I go home and shut down after work? I’m exhausted from speaking all day!

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
