Junior associates c/o 2020–how much did you put towards loans in 2021? (Money stashed away for post-forbearance also counts.) I’m bummed I did not do as well as I wanted to, and am just curious how others did and looking for motivation/advice. Graduated with 300k, put away about 45k this year.

Started February 1. Only $25k, and I maxed out my 401k, HSA, and Roth.

My first four paychecks went to credit card debt that I incurred to live during the deferral period (about $10k, my firm only gave a tiny advance). I also had about $5k in medical bills.

I could’ve been a bit more frugal but I didn’t prioritize it. My life was kinda rough the past couple years and I wanted to enjoy my life the past year.

like

Congrats on maxing out your retirement accounts! That's huge, and I think brings your total well above mine for the year. Glad you were able to find some enjoyment for yourself this past year--it's been a rough one.

Class of 2020. Started second week of jan and will end up, stashing away 110-115k (still need to buy Christmas presents lol)

Class of 2020, but clerked immediately out of school. Started with my firm in September. Between ~30k clerkship bonus (after taxes) and savings since starting, I have about 55k to put directly to my loans, which are currently at 170k total.

like

Lateralled in September from small practice, put down 20k since then. Have 280K to go 🥵

like

I'm planning to put 40k down. Not sure how that person saved 100k all for loans. Jfc

$20k or so. Not very good so I’m going to double that number this year!

like

About 30k toward loans with about 16k on crypto. Made 3 principal payments so far. Hoping to have a liquid 30g in cash and crypto by may with maybe 20k more being paid off. As of now I’m about 256k in debt for law school. I live in nyc but I’m thinking of leaving to move to a lower cost of living state at the end of my lease (July) and just waiting until my firm job realizes I’m done with nyc and gives me a talk. Then finding local employment. Problem is I don’t want to take another bar and would need 3 full time years to move where I want to transfer my admission. August would get me to 2 (maybe).

I left NY last October after spending a decade in the city. Haven't looked back once, am much happier because of it. I also despise biglaw and am looking to exit ASAP. Best of luck to you man.

Hardly saved any thing because life has been so unpredictable, lateralled from a small firm to big law in October with 8k saved and 8k paid off. I now have 25k saved with a car loan for 25k (financed bc leases were so high) and 25k in student loans. I have 1.5k credit card debt at the moment too. I pay 1850 for rent, and 600/month for car with insurance (hate my car, I should just go lease a Honda but it’s basically the same money).

Two kids under 5, I am putting in a large lump sum in their 529s to (hopefully) mean the kids are set for full tuition, room, board, etc. at at least a state school. Aside from not having that money more liquid to tap into if needed, what downside may I not be considering? I assume the money growing there is as good as the money growing in my brokerage account and I get tax benefits. 12mo emergency savings on hand as well, so do not think I need the additional cash available to me.

I’ve been casually looking for a 2 BR to buy in Manhattan. Yes I have student debt and no generational wealth here. Just looking for some moderately priced (for NY) fixer-upper to invest time in. BUT, the maintenance fees associated with some of the units I’ve seen are mind boggling. $700k for the unit (okay), $6k/mo. for maintenance (HOW? WHY?!). My mind is blown by maintenance fees, esp when there are buildings with bare min amenities. Idgi. Any tips?

Hi everyone!

I have a question for all those with a non-tech background who broke into the fintech sector as a graduate. How did you manage to get into fintech and what roles are you involved in?

I am about to graduate with a business degree but can't seem to find any referrals or even information about working in the top fintech firms in my country. I would be really glad to learn about your experiences and any advice would be really appreciated!
