There will be plenty of home grown SCs who have networked for years and have many leaders who know and can vouch for the quality of their work. If you can prove yourself and convince leaders within a year that you’re better than the home grown (or on par with top performers) then you were probably mis hired and should have been brought in as a manager
Rising Star
This.
Sigh, lol
Plus network is key for you to be a successful manager. It’s not about getting there but sustaining too. You need to build both upward and downward network.
Set your self up for success not failure. 1 yr to M is not happening.
I got hired on as an exp sc last year. There really isn't going to be any "or less" option, but I definitely think you can do in a year. Be proactive about looking for PRD opportunities that will allow you to manage teams. Seek out opportunities to get on proposals to demonstrate ability to sell, and learn our pricing strategy. Make sure you connect with local PMDs, as well as leadership on your projects. Let them know what your goal is, and that you're looking for opportunities to demonstrate your ability to perform at the next level.
Schedule weekly 1:1's with the M on your project, not to discuss in flight work on your project, but to have ongoing discussion about your performance, and what you can be doing to her him/her to click the button on your snap shots that say you're performing at the next level.
To get early promo you'll need your project leadership behind you, and support from senior leaders who will be on the year end panel.
Finally, talk to your coach - this is literally one of their primary purposes: to help advise you on stuff like this. They will also need to know to get some other things in motion so you can be considered early.
Good luck!

Makes sense D7. I guess it depends on the project size. Doing that with 20 of my direct reports would be super challenging, and as much as I want to support my people, I probably can’t spend an entire day per week doing check ins (not to mention the monthlies I do with all my coachees). Sounds like you’ve got a great Manager!
If you wanted to make M you should have been hired as M (ex-D here but this goes for all B4/generally all companies). Don’t expect a promo until 2 years in at least
Whats your total YOE? Depends on that to determine how far along you are. Pretty hard to get branch out enough and make enough of an impact in 12 months. 1.5 to 2 years is much more reasonable.
Great info. So what pragmatic things will.I need to do to stand out and make the case for M is my real question? Independent of the timeframe, what 3-5 things will I need to do?
You’re crazy! Why do you wanna put yourself through that. You’re out of your mind unless I am missing some context here.
Honey, go for at least 2 years and again it’s not guaranteed that you’ll be promoted. Not everything is up to you.

Will likely be 3 years to Manager
Rising Star
I came in as an EH SC with 18 YoE, and got promoted to M in 18 months (started in October, and March was end of performance cycle so doing it in 6 months wasn’t realistic). Worked my ass off trying to prove myself, got burnt out in the process, and left the firm in December after 3 years.
In general, be careful what you wish for. The pay bump for promotions hasn’t historically been great (I got 4.3%) so be honest with yourself about what your goals are.
It will take getting very lucky with the right role... but here is the issue... I would never staff a new SC that has no internal references in a true manager role. It just isn’t worth the risk for me. Maybe you can jump on a shorter role to get someone who can vouch for you the pivot to that stretch role. Worth a shot and make it very known that is what you want and see what happens.

So would you say that you’ve Thrived?
Yes! Boomerang and interview for Manager role.

OP I admire your ambition but this is very very hard. Your network is very important here and it will be hard to build a strong network during that time. You also need to demonstrate next level performance for at least 6 months, which would require you essentially landing in a stretch role (which is hard as an EH without a network). Can you tell us more about your background and consulting experience?
and don’t underestimate SCs and Cs, they can outperform managers so you wanna watch-out that too.
Why? Just why?
Chief
....year or less 🤣🤦♂️
Op. In addition to all that’s been said, get a sponsor. At D now. Networking is key here. Networking will Get you on the high visibility PRDs and the focus is on impact and value - not quantity. Contributing to 20 different PRDs may not tell the story of your impact in the same way that leading 2 or 3 PRDs with Analysts and Consultants on your team where you can quantify your impact while demonstrating your ability to manage to outcomes. Good luck.
