Just got my official return offer from my consulting internship this summer for a Tier 1/HCOL city. It is $75k/year with a $5k signing bonus. Planning to negotiate, but I don't have real leverage and have to make a decision before I could realistically secure a competing offer from elsewhere. How does this compare to market rate? Insanely low, also we pay way above the rest of this grouping of companies you have, way way above.
Different tier
What is your entry level salary?
FYI most firms have fixed packages for folks out of undergrad. There might not be room for negotiation on comp. Instead consider if you’d prefer to negotiate based on non-financial items like relocation package, or start date.
For example, if in your offer letter the signing bonus is supposed to be delivered in your second paycheck you could ask for it upfront so you could use the money to cover moving expenses.
I got a 75k offer with 12k signing when I joined Accenture from school…that was 6 years ago. Would’ve expected the starting offers to be higher by now.
That was 2 years ago and it remains the same to this day (for my practice and location) ^
Just lie about another offer…
What’s the move when they call your bluff?
These starts are all driven by market ebbs and flows. You’re entering the workforce at a bad time, you don’t have any leverage.
Maybe it’s worth pressing; or maybe they revoke your offer altogether. We did just lay off thousands of people, and market conditions haven’t improved since that happened, so I’d tread carefully if you don’t have other offers in hand.
This^^
We just did layoffs and most of them were associates at lower salaries than this
We’re at $90 base + bonus + 10% profit share on top of all that
Yes, of course
Google the Management Consulted salary report. I found it really helpful last year when I accepted my offer!
Which city?
Started at 75 with 7.5 signing a year ago. Times are tough, I spoke to someone who had the same starting two years before me. Need market to BOOM
In Toronto we’re at 106K CAD + 10K bonus + actual bonus
Where is this?
Which firm is this for?
This is low for non consulting companies nowadays
Accept it and then apply to Kearney for next year.
This seems low. My signing bonus a year ago when I started was $13.5 k with $90 k base salary
You’re right, you don’t have leverage coming fresh out of college. The move is to take the offer, get your first promotion and shop your resume. You only get paid coming in the door. It’s usually a good idea to do this through your first 2-3 promotions. That’s the quickest way to gain skills and improve your income.
