Actually, I am more surprised they have set working hours for a CSM? Like beyond a general framework to follow, anyway. I’m in healthcare tech - there is the occasional 6-7 pm finish to a day but it’s never required.
From what I gather, there is very minimal structure besides these hours. CSMs can arrange their calendars as they need. And no one checks in unless they're not getting their work done or are frequently unable to be reached during business hours. But I have heard that they occasionally have 5:30 meetings.
I understand that working hours may vary depending on the industry. I personally have worked 9 to 5 with a 1-hour lunch break in the past, and it worked well for me. However, it's important to consider the rest of the offer as a whole and decide if it's the right fit for you.
So 8 hours if you back out the hour for lunch? Seems reasonable to me.
Could you be overthinking this based on the other information you've provided? They likely have the set hours to make sure either coverage or everyone is available around the same time. It very well could be you do whatever you want for 5 hours of the day and then work 3 but get all your stuff done. It seems like they just want to know that they can rely on you from 9-6.
Is there anyone at the company you're comfortable discussing this with? Perhaps one of the CSMs that you met during the interview process who would be open to a 20-30 minute chat about the company culture? You could work in a line of questioning to get a sense of what the hours are in practice and if folks are actually expected to stay until 6 pm every day.
Besides this, from everything I've seen/heard, the company culture is great. They seem flexible and kind, and the CSM I spoke to said that PTO is very much encouraged.
If everything else seems great and the extra hour isn't a deal breaker then my inclination would be not to factor it in too much. Hopefully, in practice, things are more flexible about exact start and end times (though you'd need to be ok with it if they're not). Good luck with whatever you do!
It's certainly not an industry standard and the fact that they said that is a yellow flag for me if not a red one. Be plain with them and get a plain explanation. There's no use accepting a job who can't have a frank conversation about hours and work/life balance from the start. Things may not get better with time.
That's pretty normal hours. 8 hours of working time, 1 hour lunch. Most CSM positions are pretty flexible depending on you schedule for the day.
