Just started at a big law firm. Only one seniority associate comes in everyday (7a-7p 🤔) but the partners and other associates on my team don’t come in (maybe one partner 2-3 times a week, other associates are a couple years above me). I’m new but I moved to be able to take advantage of the hybrid model. I thought it makes sense to come in for the first couple of weeks. When is it ok to start WFH without seeming like I’m slacking?

Immediately. The only way they know whether you’re slacking or not is the hours you put into your timekeeper. While it’s good to go in and get some face time and meet people, going into the office isn’t necessarily a great datapoint for productivity.

like

What’s the firm policy? If there is no requirement for you to be in, then you can WFH whenever you want. I doubt anyone would think you’re slacking.

like

I would go in for now to try and meet people. Just because someone has not been in since you started, does not mean they never will be. I am sometimes in three days one week and zero the next two. You may catch people here and there. Then go hybrid.

Looking to potentially make a switch but have heard different things across the board, including seeing that most of the job postings for senior roles in these groups are tagged to offices and don’t say remote.

Have an offer in hand in my market of choice, going to ask my firm if they will formally let me transfer to their NYO, and if not, I plan to put my notice in. Have a very long commute right now and I look forward to being able to bike to work! I don’t think this firm I am at will accommodate, but will try nonetheless!

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…
