KPMG folks, if you log 8 hours as PTO on a given day and then also log billable hours on the same day, will that inflate your adjusted utilization %?

Ok smartass. Your PTO is removed from 2080 hour denominator in adjusted utilization. So yes, it would inflate it. It would, also, throw out your chargeability metric, the RM forecasts as well as make it look like you are inflating your own hours. And loses you money. So, OP, does that answer your question? Or do you need someone else on this thread who tried to be helpful before explain 2nd grade fractions to you?

like

@AC1 question is why are you logging 8 hours of PTO on that day you worked? Why not 4 PTO 4 client or whatever it may be

like

But why do you need to know the answer? The premise of the question makes no sense and should never happen in practice

like

Idiot

like

That makes no sense. You either work hours or take vacation

like

Lol if you want inflate utilization by incorrectly logging time be my guest, see where that gets you. Would be very easy to catch

like

It'd be stupid to waste PTO hours if you're working. You need to code 8 hours a day at the minimum, if you work 5 hours you should only code 3 to PTO.

like

Now you're just being stubborn. The community has spoken, your problem is solved, your PTO is not wasted. Onto the next one

like

But if you work on a given day, that is not vacation...like if you work even 2 hours, you should count that as 2 hours deducted from your vacation. Hence 2 billable hrs, 6 vacation hrs. Makes no sense to say that's a full vacation day

like

Yes you can do that for days in which you are unstaffed (changing admin hours to pto), but not charging 8 PTO hours then billable on top. Also the year doesn't end for 10 months, a bit early to be worrying about utilization hacks right now

like

No, it's not. They don't use adjusted utilization for anything that actually matters. They only use direct utilization = billable/2080. If you're below target, then you're below target. Our VC ranges are broad for a reason, this is not just stupid it makes it look like you took hours away from the firm. I got in to trouble for this once so I'm warning you, ffs, DO NOT do this. Your partner and HR will have to talk about it and it's a whole mess that DOES NOT go away.

like

You know our fiscal year starts and ends in October right?

like

Sounds sketchy, especially if it takes 3 or 4 replies to explain your position. Utilization is not what you should worry about. If you do good work you'll get pulled onto good projects with high performing teams and then you won't have to worry about utilization. Gaming the system for short term gains can royally fuck your long-term professional reputation at the firm

like

You should change your 8 hours of PTO to 8 hours of work. If you think you're pulling one over on someone you aren't. You'll get a note from RM. your SPML reviews all chargeable hours and PTO hours of something looks odd you'll get an email.

like

AC1 You could get pulled into work during your vacation because of urgent client issues. You bill the hours you work but you're still taking vacation.

Thanks for the responses everyone. My question hasn't been answered: if you log billable hours on top of 8 PTO hours do you increase you adjusted utilization? No need to tell me what makes sense or doesn't. I'm looking for specific answer to specific question.

Everyone I fully understand this scenario and don't need to be lectured. If you don't have an answer to the specific question posed, then you're not helping me. Thank you for your time.

Thank you K2 for the helpful response.

If your utilization for the year is below target, then is it legitimate to willingly sacrifice your PTO hours to help increase it, especially if you are going to lose certain PTO hours from not using them by year end? I would not been trying to pull a fast one. I would do this with full transparency and state my reasons to anyone at the firm asking me. Again, feel free to tell me that I'm off base, or call me names, your choice. I'm still trying to be polite here.

Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?

Is it normal for a Product Owner to lay out specs for how a feature should work?

I thought that was my job as the ux designer to figure out the best way to solve a need. But I’m getting handed projects where the PO, and sometimes the senior designer has laid out exactly what should happen (components used, flow, etc) to design a feature. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be speaking up on what I think or just do the UI work I’m asked to.
