Ladies who commute, I need some advice. I wake up at 5:45am to make a 7:22am train & rush out at 5pm to catch a 5:22pm that gets me home at 6:45pm, where I sneak in a final bottle with my 7m old daughter before her 7:15pm bedtime. By the time she’s down it’s time to eat & I am exhausted beyond belief. If you’re working out during these long days, my question is when and what are you doing? I miss walking & desperately want to lose my baby weight, but it feels impossible. Inspiration welcome 🥹

I also have a 7 month old. Girl, it’s hard! But this is my second baby and this time I prioritized getting my mind/body back! First, I got on a GLP-1. Second, I work out at 8am after my husband takes kids to daycare (20-45 min depending on the day) and then show up at work late. I’m in big law so this seems to work, esp since I’m always online after dinner and bedtime. Down 25 lbs so far!

I wouldn’t last with that schedule and a baby. I’d seek a new job, preferably hybrid or remote or more flexible hours.

I don't have practical advice but I did want to send support and am disappointed by some of the responses above. Changing jobs isn't always practical, quick, or easy. And figuring out how to balance it all is extremely hard- regardless of what job you have. A small walking pad might be the most practical option given your current constraints

like

I had my first baby last year and realized pretty quickly my job at the time wasn’t going to work out… started looking when he was 10 months and secured a fully remote job a few months later. 30 minutes wake time with your baby is absolutely not enough time. Life comes first.

like

I would look for a new job…

If you are able to walk to the station, add that in. A standing desk and doing weights during calls helps too. Do what you can.

like

Walking pad if you have a standing desk? I can do most work things on my computer while walking slowly. Some are expensive others not a huge investment

Wake up even earlier, unfortunately. I have an early riser toddler who is up at 6:30 AM. I’m up at 5 am to get my workout, breakfast, and shower in before hand.

like

I wake up obscenely early (I usually set up an alarm for 4:30am but I’m often up before) and have a great home gym setup.

like

I sweat too much to slide a 20-30 min workout in over lunch, but I have always envied people who can make that work. Honestly, if that doesn’t work, it’s getting up at 5 or after putting baby down. Or it’s just walking everywhere you can - sounds like you may work in a city and even if not, bring sneakers and go for a walk during the day. First year is tough, have some grace.

Throwing in my hopefully helpful opinion. Weight loss is more about diet than exercise. For weight loss in these very challenging early days of motherhood, reduce your food intake by like 15% every day. The weight will come off slowly but surely. Exercise would be maybe about 25% of weight loss, but I would focus on where you can make more gains given your time constraints as a working mom. All the best to you and your bundle.

like

What are you doing between 5:45am and 7:22am?

Can morning time with baby include a 20 minute jogger stroller jog?

like

The commute time is intense. If you can’t change that I would change baby’s sleeping schedule to go to bed later and wake up later. At this stage, when you play a part of the bedtime schedule, it will make you very sleepy too so maybe try to have that feature happen later.

Try remote work
It looks like the set up you have is not really working for you
But trust me when I say this : I'm very proud of you,you are not doing great
Focus on your children more than you are focusing on your job that could replace you at anytime
Your bond and connection with your children, your life with less stress is more important that the job you have
You are a smart girl ,you will figure it out ❤️
I believe in you

I just got a really great offer, only downside is the eligibility for maternity leave is after 12 months of employment. We got a faint positive today but have had so many chemical pregnancies over the past year that I am not confident it will stick this time BUT I am on aspirin and progesterone for this try … so it could.. I want to see if I could negotiate being eligible earlier but I also don’t want them to think I’m pregnant when I’m not actually… How would you approach the conversation?

I give massive kudos to all the parents out there juggling work and home life. But it’s starting to feel like I pulled the short stick by not having a kid. Really struggling to pick up all of the slack from all of the colleagues that do have kids and feel like the expectation is that parents should turn off while the rest are working from 7am - 2am everyday to make up for it.

Is that normal or should they give me a noise compliance and force him to stay quiet after some time.
